R.I.P. J.D.

sys63 :: PITHY & DYNAMIC

Submitted for the approval of the Mix Tape Appreciation Society, I humbly present ... "Pithy & Dynamic":

1. Beulah - "Score from Augusta"
In anticipation of Beulah frontman Miles Kurosky's upcoming, highly anticipated solo debut on Majordomo, I thought I'd return to his larger-than-life, hard-to-beat roots.

2. Tenacious D - "Master Exploder"
A nod to one of those fake-plastic-guitar games for getting me hooked on this hilariously rockin' tune from Jack Black and Kyle Gass.

3. Dios - "See How They Run" [FREE MP3]
Forever and always one of the world's most underrated bands. Download their free new "single" (actually two songs) on Buddyhead and find out what you're missing.

4. Doomtree - "Coup for the Kings"
From the Twin Cities' pre-eminent hip-hop collective comes one of the most addictive "joints" of all time, featuring rhymes by Sims and P.O.S. and beats by the infallible Lazerbeak (who was *trivia time* the frontman for the now-defunct Plastic Constellations).

5. Bran Van 3000 - "Rainshine"
Canada, you've finally made up for "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You."

6. RJD2 feat. Kenna - "Games You Can't Win"
I like RJD2, I do, but what really drew me to this lush soundscape was the addition of Neptunes/N*E*R*D-supported singer Kenna. He really deserves more fans.

7. New Vaudeville Band - "Winchester Cathedral"
Recently heard on one of those cheesy TIME LIFE collections that have infomercials that religiously play after "Saturday Night Live" on those dreary Sunday mornings. Oh, the small hours....

8. Mos Def - "Quiet Dog"
I didn't think I'd ever call myself a Mos Def fan after the dreadful "The New Danger" (which had less than a handful of memorable tracks), but my favorite DJ, KUWS's Walt Dizzo, told me "The Ecstatic" was well worth my time. Was he right? He always is, man.

9. Cordalene - "Last Breakup" [Live on WPRB]
Of all the largely-unheard-of bands I champion, this is one of my all-time favorites. Right up there with Dealership. Oh, that's right. So take a listen and see what you think; fans of the Pixies' more melodic, less angst-y moments should find much to love here.

10. Mason Jennings - "Nothing" [Live]
Though this track's "parent" EP, "Living in the Moment," is somewhat hard to come by, I'm sure glad I picked one up when I had a chance. (Especially since it was signed by Mason himself!)

11. Decembers Architects - "Peloria"
One of the great, now-defunct bands that emerged from the St. Cloud-by-way-of-MPLS scene that gave us Nothing Jive About Jupiter/reru (and, eventually, Best Friends Forever), Building Better Bombs (yep, that P.O.S. "side project"), the Plastic Constellations and ... I know I'm forgetting a few names, but, if you like real math rock, I know you're going to dig this.

12. Dashboard Confessional - "Don't Wait"
And ... I don't know what to say for myself right now, but I find this overtly "pretty" song hard to resist. My apologies.

13. The Wannadies - "Little by Little"
Back on track, here's one of my favorite Swedish groups. Refer to what I said about Cordalene if you want to get a feel for why I love these guys oh so.

14. The Red Hot Valentines - "You Sang to Me"
Like Motion City Soundtrack, these guys took their Weezer pills growing up, ran with it and made something rather enjoyable out of it. It's hard not to smile when you hear stuff this delightfully poppy.

15. Supergrass - "Nothing More's Gonna Get in My Way"
Fresh off my review of Gaz Coombes and Danny Goffey's cover band Hot Rats for the Budgeteer, I thought it prudent to pay a little respect to the group which allowed them to record such a vanity (though highly entertaining) side project.

16. Botch - "Spaim"
Not to steal Brick Tamland's thunder or anything, but ... "LOUD NOISES!"

17. Nirvana - "Dumb"
Compared to Botch, this is f------ Beethoven.

18. Pedro the Lion - "I Am Always the One Who Calls"
David Bazan's "Curse Your Branches" made my top albums of 2009 for the Budgeteer, and here he is shining with his former mates in Pedro the Lion. Love it.

19. Superdrag - "My Prayer"
It's funny; had the boys in Superdrag not decided to cover this one up with blown-out amp fuzz, they would've had quite a nice ballad on their hands. Oh, well, at least we have this one.

20. The Bouncing Souls - "Say Anything"
Always one of my favorite band names and ... wanna know a secret? I'm pretty sure this is the first time these punk faves have made one of these here mix tapes. And I've only made about 12,000 of them, so I'm feeling kind of bad right now.

21. Self - "Fliptop Box"
All hail the mighty Matt Mahaffey!

22. Pain - "Adam's Apple"
Found this gem on a random ska-punk compilation my girlfriend gave me. Lord only knows why she had it, but I'm sure glad she did.

23. Fuzzbubble - "Don't Let it Get You Down"
Like Redd Kross? So do these guys, apparently. I love it!

24. Major Lazer - "Pon de Floor"
Another must-hear '09 track introduced to me by Sir Walt Dizzo. Thanks again, man; my apologies to Michna, but there is no sound sweeter than Diplo and Switch fiddling around in the studio.

25. The Revolution Smile - "I Wish I"
A bittersweet masterpiece in the key of Failure. Melancholy never tasted so optimistic. (By the way, this is the version from "We Are in This Alone," not "Above the Noise." I don't know if there is a difference, but one can only assume since they are two very different records.)

Thus concludes your sixty-third dose of SHAKE*YOUR*SHORES, the awesome mix tape series formerly known as "Don't Tell a Soul."

Major Lazer (Diplo+Switch) coming to MPLS

DIPLO AND SWITCH ANNOUNCE MAJOR LAZER TOUR, "LAZERS NEVER DIE"

CROSS CONTINENTAL TOUR BEGINS MARCH 27th IN MIAMI

UK DUBSTEP PRODUCER AND MAD DECENT SIGNEE, RUSKO, TO OPEN ON ALL DATES

Major Lazer, the cartoon musical machination of Diplo and Switch and Jamaican zombie-slaying renegade who we all learned to love in 2009, is teaching us an important lesson early in 2010: Lazers Never Die. There's no better way to prove this than by bringing their bass-thumping parties across the continent for full US tour this spring! From Miami to San Francisco, Diplo and Switch will blast their futuristic dance hall sounds into the hearts and heads of old and new fans alike.

Last year's release of Major Lazer's debut album, Guns Don't Kill People, Lazers Do, brought a round of critical applause from the likes of Rolling Stone, Spin, the New Yorker, Fader, Filter, Nylon, Paste, GQ, XLR8R, Bust, Pitchfork and was voted one of the top 10 albums of the year by the New York Times. The futuristic dancehall and digital reggae bangers have set the bar for DJs and their fans to expect a higher quality of cross continental influences in modern dance music. 2009 was just the start for Diplo and Switch's protégé, Major Lazer, and we can expect 2010 to be even bigger and better with more awe inspiring, sweaty dance floor nights to come!

Major Lazer will be joined on the road by one Mad Decent's most exciting new artists to watch out for in 2010, Rusko.

Music, art, bio and more available upon request.

PRESS ON MAJOR LAZER

Well paced and immaculately produced - PITCHFORK

The shotgun rhythms, spaghetti western guitars, and dubstep explosions intertwine with lover's rock, roots reggae, and other island styles to impressively evoke the pair's genre-splicing DJ sets. - SPIN

This year's best dancehall album - NYLON

The guys do an incredible job of combining both the "Diplo" and "Switch" styles with that of Major Lazer, while still paying respect to a genre they clearly love.- URB

Gorillaz is back! Gorillaz is back!

"Plastic Beach," the new album from Gorillaz, will be released by Virgin on 9 March, 2010.

The album is preceded by first single Stylo (featuring Mos Def and Bobby Womack) which will receive its radio broadcast premiere tonight and will be available for download January 26.

When reached with news of the leak that pushed up the premiere of the "Stylo" single, Gorillaz bass god Murdoc Niccals ranted via Twitter http://twitter.com/MurdocGorillaz: "A leak! A leak! Plastic Beach has sprung a leak! One of those Russian pirates has put a bullet hole in my island! My single's leaked! STYLO!"

Five years on from the release of Demon Days, Murdoc and co. return with Plastic Beach. The band have taken up residence, recording on a secret floating island deep in the South Pacific, a Plastic Beach HQ, made up of the detritus, debris and washed up remnants of humanity. This Plastic Beach is the furthest point from any landmass on Earth; the most deserted spot on the planet.

The world's biggest animated band, Gorillaz formed in 1998, and have since sold 12 million copies over two albums Gorillaz (2000) and Demon Days (2005). They have hit number 1 in more than a dozen countries and picked up awards including Grammys, Novellos, VMAs and EMAs.

The Gorillaz' return will be marked by a headline appearance at this year's Coachella festival. The Sunday April 18 performance will be the first Gorillaz live spectacle on U.S. soil since the awe-inspiring Demon Days Live run in April 2006 at New York's Apollo Theater.

Plastic Beach is produced by Gorillaz.

The full tracklisting is as follows:
1. Orchestral Intro (featuring Sinfonia ViVA)
2. Welcome To The World Of The Plastic Beach (feat. Snoop Dogg & Hypnotic Brass Ensemble)
3. White Flag (feat. Kano, Bashy & The National Orchestra For Arabic Music)
4. Rhinestone Eyes
5. Stylo (feat. Bobby Womack & Mos Def)
6. Superfast Jellyfish (feat. Gruff Rhys & De La Soul)
7. Empire Ants (feat. Little Dragon)

Do good, earn 'Songs for Haiti'

Today, Paste launched "Songs for Haiti" (http://songsforhaiti.org).

Like so many others, Paste has been moved by the tragedy facing the survivors of the Haitian earthquake.
Wondering how we could help, we remembered the website we built last year for the Save Paste Campaign. Thanks to your generosity, and that of over 150 artists who donated songs, we raised more than $250,000 to help our magazine survive its darkest hour.

But what we faced was nothing compared to what hundreds of thousands of people are experiencing right now in Haiti. The need is staggering, and help will be needed for months and years to come. To help raise money and keep awareness high, Paste and diverse artists—Ludacris, Of Montreal, Andrew Bird, Hanson, Umphrey's McGee, Switchfoot, Bruce Cockburn, Xiu Xiu, and over 200 others—are offering free MP3s (many previously unavailable) to everyone who donates to help Haiti.

You can donate through Paste or to a charity of your choice (just tell us), and you will have access to our Download Vault and 250 songs (and counting). We don’t think people should donate to the relief efforts in Haiti just to get a reward. But this gives Paste and artists a way to help, using the thing we’re most passionate about—music.

If you've already donated elsewhere, we hope you'll tell us and take advantage of the free songs. We want to make a strong statement of concern and show the generosity of our readers and the music community in general. We also hope you'll continue giving as you are able.

You can donate (or tell us about donations you made elsewhere) at: SongsForHaiti.org. You'll also find resources (banner ads, Twitter & Facebook icons, etc.) to help spread the word.

100% of money contributed through “Songs for Haiti” will be spread among three charities active in Haiti: Doctors Without Borders, Red Cross, and Wyclef Jean’sYele Haiti Earthquake Fund. (Note that donations submitted directly to “Songs for Haiti” are not tax deductible, since Paste is not a charitable organization.)

For more details, including the full list of artists participating, see: SongsForHaiti.org

Rhymesayers, Freeway and Jake One one-up George W.

I don't care much for Freeway's rhymes, but this is pretty cool:

In anticipation of the February 16, 2010 release of FREEWAY & JAKE ONE "The Stimulus Package", Rhymesayers' flagship store, Fifth Element is following suit in Freeway's efforts to stimulate the Hip-Hop industry. Everyone who pre-orders "The Stimulus Package" at www.fifthelementonline.com will receive a stimulus check courtesy of the Fifth Element. Each will ship to recipients separate from the album and bonus mixtapes. The Fifth Element stimulus checks will be good for 15% off any purchase at Fifth Element. Checks will be mailed separate from the album and bonus mixtapes. Envelopes will be adorned with limited edition Freeway & Jake One Stimulus Package postage stamps.

-> Read my review of Jake One's "White Van Music" here. <-

Fifth Element would like to increase the chances of those who pre-order by drawing not one, but five winners! Giving away a total of $500.00 in the Hip-Hop Recovery and Reinvestment Act initiative. Winners may use prize money as they wish, towards Fifth Element, Rhymesayers, or to support Hip-Hop in any way they see fit. The theme of this release is to appreciate and pay it forward. Freeway and Fifth Element would like to thank their fans and customers for their continued support, and what better way than giving away cold hard cash.

Fifth Element has decided to do their part in The Stimulus Package by adding two more bonus items for those who pre-order. In addition to receiving the Freeway & Jake One "The Stimulus Package", personalized FE stimulus check, and entry into a cash prize drawing, each pre-order will get Freeway's most recent mixtapes (while supplies last). She & Him reveal 'Volume Two' details

She & Him will release their sophomore album, Volume Two, on March 23rd. Written by Zooey Deschanel (She) and produced by M. Ward (Him), Volume Two is the follow up to the duo's critically acclaimed debut, Volume One. The album includes eleven original tracks and two covers: "Ridin' in My Car" by NRBQ and Skeeter Davis' "Gonna Get Along Without You Now."

Described by Zooey as a "feel-good album," Volume Two is bolstered by rich harmonies, sweet-as-sugar melodies, and Brill Building choruses. From sweeping opener "Thieves" and first single "In the Sun" (featuring guest vocals by Tilly and the Wall), to the tempo and mood shifts of "Home" and the vocals-only, hymn-like closer "If You Can't Sleep," Volume Two shimmers from start to finish.

Visit the newly redesigned She & Him website for updates as the release date approaches.

Volume Two track listing:
1. Thieves
