Mix Tape Appreciation Society No. 6 :: ONLY SO MANY ALBUMS IN THE DAY
I made this mix tape for you ... AND YOU ALONE!
1. The Winebirds - "I Obscenity in Thy Mother's Milk"
From my review of "Séance Hill,” the Portland group's new(est) album, : This title track is just bursting with nervous autumn energy.
2. Motion City Soundtrack - "Boombox Generation"
I missed it by a few years, but "big ups" to those born in the early years of Generation Y: aka the headphone generation.
From the Minnesota group's latest opus, "Light Chasers,"
a "56-minute journey with no audio breaks that explores love and loss and searches for the light at the end of the tunnel." (Yes, that was me "biting" the official press release for the album, but, really, I couldn't have explained what it was about without the help.)

One-half of the Posies' uncanny songwriting team does not equate to half the thrills. Not even close. This is tremendous, tremendous music.
5. Emot - "Cheapskate"
Doesn't it suck when you're labeled this and you're actually just poor? No fun.
My guess is that this isn't about North Dakota's famed Red River of the North (as it flows northward), but, then again, I've never been that adept at understanding what songs are actually about.
Truth be told: I prefer to mold songs to fit my life experiences. Isn't that the best way to enjoy records, anyway?

7. Brand New - "Magazines"
My interest in this group was first piqued when I was waiting for my Amtrak train in Chicago. Killing time, I checked out the attached mall-type-thing's overpriced record store. This band's debut, "Your Favorite Weapon,"
was in the "best sellers" section of the store. I assumed they were local, as I had never heard of the group before and ... I just realized how boring I must appear to my woman, my friends, my family and, among others, the blog-perusing world at large.
Regardless, I like this track.

A bizarre little intro before ...

10. Lazerbeak - "Legend Recognize Legend"
As I still haven't received my copy of the former Plastic Constellations
member's solo debut (!) in the mail, I thought I'd pull up the Doomtree-minded (his new crew) track he named it after.

Speaking of The Current (and I selected these tracks before heading down to the Cities, mind you), one of the station's DJs introduced a track from "All Things Must Pass"

I guess I've never fully admitted to myself that at least half of the bands I wholeheartedly adore probably listened to Jellyfish records growing up the way I listened to Pearl Jam records. I'm looking at you, Matt Mahaffey of Self, in particular.
16. Head Like a Kite - "Noisy at the Circus"
Yes, you do recognize that voice: It's Asy from Smoosh. Love those girls!

This lead dude's a bit of a downer, no? Nice slithering sound though.
18. J Church - "She Says"
R.I.P. Lance Hahn.
One of the most innovative groups out there. And they show no sign of slowing. Like Muse (on a level of grandiose-ness), but far less pretentious.
Sleater-Kinney frontwoman rocks out by herself. Good stuff.
21. Kings of Leon - "Joe's Head"
Despite letting their fans down earlier this year in St. Louis, there is still much to love here.
Another boring-ass story from old-as-shit me: My Nintendo-sponsored (it's true) trip to Seattle in college was rendered even more unforgettable after popping a few Minus the Bear tracks into the player. There is something to be said about hometown heroes.

The tour which kicks off in Canada at Montreal's Bell Centre on October 3 and includes the recently added San Diego, CA appearance at the Viejas Arena. Mix Tape Appreciation Society No. 5 :: SONGS FOR 'BIG C'
This very-special awesome mix tape was hand-crafted for my friend "Big C." She's a peach. And, quite frankly, she puts up with a lot of my shit, so it was high time for me to do something nice in return.
Before we start, a few random factoids about her, so you can get a better idea of what we're dealing with:
She drives a "power wagon." It's a truck.
She's smarter than most. In turn, boys are intimidated by her.
She likes to dance on tables ... perhaps to counter-balance how prim and proper she has to act during the week? You know, when she's being smart and all.
She once sent me a link to the video for David Guetta's "Toyfriend." I thought it was the most revealing thing ever: Maybe, just maybe, smart people are more like us than I originally thought. They too enjoy dance-tastic tracks with titles you need Urban Dictionary to decipher.
And, finally, her man lives all the way up in Toronto. From what I've been told, it's a pretty big city. (ha ha ha)

She spent some time in the EU. (For all you disbelievers out there: Phoenix is a French band, for the thousandth time....) More importantly, she casually drops "EU" into seemingly unrelated conversations. This is true.
3. The Rural Alberta Advantage - "Don't Haunt This Place"
I made the mistake of thinking her BF was from this province. My bad.... I did get it right on Track 11, though!
4. Haley Bonar - "Arms of Harm"
This is just a good song.
5. Atmosphere - "Pour Me Another"
This one too. I mean, if she's living in the Twin Cities metro area, she should definitely know what Atmosphere is all about and who Slug and Ant are. (I figured this one was a good place to start, because: If there's a jukebox and I'm drinking, I'll be playing this one every single time.)
6. The Pixies - "Manta Ray" (Live at the BBC)
Another educational piece: Big C, here lies the greatest rock 'n' roll band in the history of our planet. Enjoy.
7. Best Friends Forever - "Handpocket"
I went to prom with one of the two "Friends." And she was my across-the-street neighbor growing up. How random is that?
8. Cars & Trucks - "Too Bad So Sad"
Rock! The Duluth News Tribune is putting together its annual back-to-school pullout Wave section for incoming freshman and I was invited to wax ecstatic about bands I like. Here's what I said about these guys: Despite an aversion to playing many out-of-town shows, Cars & Trucks is, without a doubt, the most exciting rock ‘n’ roll group in the state. While frontman Tony Bennett (no, not that Tony Bennett) has been known to produce some of the most gorgeous melodies known to man, what makes his latest outfit so essential to a night on the town are its fiery, ear-blistering blasts of post-punk “white heat.” You have been warned.
This track's "bed" is Big C's beloved "Toyfriend."

Sloan, Canada's pre-eminent musical export, seemingly wrote this one for Big C: It's all about spending the rest of one's days in the Great White North!

Besides talking about wanting to go to Ontario (obviously what she thinks about night and day), this blistering track includes the most head-scratchingly bizarre lyrics: "Big birds flying overhead / Who gives a shit?"

Big C has a weakness for Lady Gaga-level bombastic pop music. These two should keep her at bay.

For the longest time, Big C assumed her nickname was A) anatomically correct and B) completely insulting. Truth is, I needed a device to remember her real name (let's just say that, if I were a senator, I would propose a bill requiring all Americans to wear name tags every waking hour). For whatever reason, this song popped into my head.
Not a riveting story, granted, but it is a great song, so no one should be complaining.

I heard chicks are into Cake these days, which is A-OK with me.
16. Terry Lynn - "Kingstonlogic [Angry Mix]"
Reference No. 12 and No. 13, but then factor in this little slice of knowledge: Even nice girls have bad days. She can save this one for when the phone lines are down in Canada.
Hmm ... hope she doesn't get the wrong idea from this one. And, with lyrics like "I'm gonna throw you in the ocean and see if you swim," how could she?!
In truth, I thought this gently violent track was a nice way of summing up our back-and-forths. They're entertaining to both parties,* but stumble into one of our "insult potlucks" and you might think we hate each other.

I always thought this would be the perfect wedding-dance song ... and I can only imagine that when this is played at mine, we'll definitely be kissing the security deposit goodbye as Big C takes to the tables!

What special-issue mix tape would be complete without the requisite Dealership track?

Following the summer success of The Way Out (on Temporary Residence), The Books expand their upcoming fall North American tour to include stops along the Midwest and East Coast. In addition to the excellent reception of their new record, The Books have also developed a reputation for their engaging live shows, which mix audio and visual components to appropriately reveal each song's complete environment.

Cloud Cult lines up three Minnesota dates on new tour
Cloud Cult Announce Fall Headlining Tour in Support of New Full-Length Studio Album – Light Chasers – Out September 14th on Earthology Records!
New York, NY – Cloud Cult are excited to announce their fall headlining tour in support of their new full-length album – Light Chasers – due out September 14th on Earthology Records. The record is the band’s first new studio release in more than two years and critics are already weighing in favorably with Pitchfork calling the album “…epic, millennial indie rock…” and John Richards from KEXP saying that Light Chasers is “the best thing Cloud Cult has ever done, which is saying a lot as everything they’ve done so far is near perfection.”
The US headlining tour will kick off near the band’s home base of Minneapolis at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN and the trek spans out over the next three months taking Cloud Cult to nearly every major US city and finds them playing renowned venues across the country including the Bluebird Theater in Denver, the Showbox in Seattle, the Trocadero in Philly and First Avenue in Minneapolis.
This run will also include a very special performance with none other than Boulder, Colorado’s eTown (www.etown.org) on September 12th. This show will be taped in front of a live audience and can be heard coast-to-coast on NPR/public, commercial, and community radio stations. Held at the Boulder Theater, the grand atmosphere will perfectly compliment Cloud Cult’s unique stage performance. eTown has a long history of presenting a variety of well known acts including Ani DiFranco, Beth Orton, Bright Eyes, Cyndi Lauper, Imogen Heap, Ingrid Michaelson, Jason Mraz, Matthew Caws from Nada Surf, Moby, Patterson Hood & John Neff of Drive-By Truckers, Spoon and The Avett Brothers just to name a few.
Cloud Cult will hit the East Coast in October and on November 17th and 18th they will be headlining First Avenue in Minneapolis for two hometown shows in celebration of the new album. This choice of venue is especially befitting as this past July, First Avenue honored Cloud Cult with a star on the side of the venue. This symbol of appreciation has also been extended to the likes of Aerosmith, Big Star, Depeche Mode, Devo, Flaming Lips, Foo Fighters, Metallica, Nirvana and PJ Harvey as well as many other acclaimed artists.
