BEASTIE BOYS NOMINATED FOR ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME INDUCTION
Beastie Boys have been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011, it was announced today.
Formed 1981 in New York City, Beastie Boys are arguably the single longest lived hip-hop act to consistently enjoy commercial and critical success both on record and as an international live attraction. Beastie Boys first changed the course of popular music when their 1986 debut album Licensed To Ill was the first hip hop record to reach #1. Since then, Mike "Mike D" Diamond, Adam "MCA" Yauch, and Adam "Ad Rock" Horovitz have logged 40 million in record sales, three Grammy awards, the MTV Video Vanguard Lifetime Achievement award, four #1 albums, and countless sold out world tours, magazine covers and TV appearances.
Beastie Boys' musical history is as rich as it is varied: By 1982, the band was releasing the Pollywog Stew EP and playing its first public gigs opening for the likes of Bad Brains at storied NYC venues including CBGB, A7 and Max's Kansas City. The current Mike D/MCA/Adrock Beastie Boys lineup debuted in 1983 with the "Cooky Puss" 12", after which the band first hooked up with Rick Rubin for 1984's "Rock Hard"/"Beastie Groove" 12," the second ever record released by Def Jam. The next year saw the release of a few more Def Jam 12"s as the band supporting Madonna on the entire North American Virgin Tour.
Licensed To Ill dropped in fall 1986. Fueled by "Fight For Your Right," "No Sleep Til Brooklyn," "Brass Monkey" and more it remained at #1 for seven weeks and simultaneously reached #2 on the urban chart, becoming the fastest selling debut to date for Columbia and the first hip hop record to break 5 million sales.
1989's landmark Paul's Boutique saw Beastie Boys resurface with a new deal (Capitol), a new home (Los Angeles) and a kaleidoscopic new array of sounds. Produced by Beastie Boys and the Dust Brothers, Paul's Boutique laid down the blueprint for a generation of emergent genres. "Shake Your Rump," "Lookin' Down The Barrel Of A Gun," "Car Thief," Shadrach," and the hip hop "suite" "B-Boy Bouillabaisse" elevated Beastie Boys to a new level of critical respect: thumbs up from Robert Christgau, four stars from Rolling Stone, and various accolades hailing it as the "Pet Sounds or Dark Side Of The Moon of Hip Hop."
Check Your Head, released in 1992, heralded the return of live instrumentation into the B Boys mix, with Mike D on drums, Yauch on bass and Adrock on guitar. Produced by the band and Mario Caldato Jr. and recorded at Beastie Boys' own G-Son studios, Check Your Head would yield new B Boys staples including "So Whatcha' Want," "Pass The Mic," "Gratitude" and "Jimmy James." With the assistance of Keyboard Money Mark, Beastie Boys returned to the touring circuit and Check Your Head hit double platinum.
In the summer of 1994, Ill Communication, also produced by the band and Mario Caldato Jr., entered the charts at #1 as the album's first video, "Sabotage," directed by Spike Jonze, became an instant classic. Royalties from two songs on Ill Communication were donated to found the Milarepa Fund, which staged the Tibetan Freedom Concert series. Drawing crowds well into the hundreds of thousands and featuring performances from U2, Radiohead, Beck, Bjork, Patti Smith, Fugees, Joe Strummer, Pearl Jam, John Lee Hooker, Foo Fighters, R.E.M., A Tribe Called Quest, Yoko Ono, Sonic Youth and many more, the Tibetan Freedom Concerts would rank among the most significant benefit concerts of the '90s. Meanwhile, Ill Communication was supported by Beastie Boys' first arena headline tour since the '80s: The Quadraphonic Joystick Action tour, which sold out NYC's Madison Square Garden and Chicago's Rosemont Horizon in half an hour each, Massachusetts' Worcester Centrum in approximately 20 minutes, and Detroit's Cobo Arena in nine. One dollar from each ticket sold on the tour was donated through Milarepa to local charities in each city on the tour.
Hello Nasty was released July 1998 and, spurred by the monster success of "Intergalactic," clocked first week sales of nearly 700,000 in the U.S. and debuted at #1 in England, Germany, Australia, Holland, New Zealand and Sweden, #2 in Canada and Japan, and Top 10 in Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, Belgium, Finland, France and Israel. That same month, Beastie Boys' 360-degree In The Round tour would be unveiled, its turntable stage set offering unobstructed sightlines from every seat, while a specially designed circular P.A. gave new dimension to the term "Surround Sound." Beastie Boys rounded out 1998 by accepting the Video Vanguard honor at the MTV Video Music Awards, and rang in 1999 with Artist, Band and/or Record of the Year accolades from Rolling Stone, SPIN, The New Yorker and Playboy, among others. A month later, at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards, the quadruple-platinum Hello Nasty took Best Alternative Music Performance, while "Intergalactic," nailed Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group--the first time an artist would win in both Rap and Alternative categories.
In the wake of September 11, 2001 the Beastie Boys-headlined New Yorkers Against Violence benefit was staged October 28 & 29 at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom, with proceeds disbursed to the New York Women's Foundation Disaster Relief Fund and the New York Association for New Americans (NYANA) September 11th Fund for New Americans--both chosen for their efforts on behalf of those affected by the September 11th attacks least likely to receive help from other sources. The NYAV line-up included the Strokes, the B-52's, Mos Def, N*E*R*D, the Roots, Afrika Bambaata, a surprise two-song set by Moby and Michael Stipe (featuring an impromptu cameo by Bono), and more. Not long after, Beastie Boys added their voice to the growing protest against America's imminent course toward war, offering the track "In A World Gone Mad" as a free download on Beastieboys.com, moveon.org, winwithoutwarUS.org, MTV.com, and milarepa.org.
Beastie Boys' sixth studio album, To The 5 Boroughs, released in summer 2004, was the band's third consecutive #1 debut-and Rolling Stone's only 5-star review of that year. To The 5 Boroughs was supported by the Challah At Your Boy traveling pageant--which climaxed with a sold-out October 9 homecoming at Madison Square Garden, at which cameras were distributed to 50 audience members, whose efforts (and herculean editing sessions) spawned the feature-length AWESOME; I F----N' SHOT THAT!, which debuted at Sundance in early 2006 and was released theatrically the same year.
With 2007's Grammy winning all-instrumental The Mix-Up, Beastie Boys threw fans a curveball reminder of the one constant throughout the band's 29-year-and-counting career: reinvention. The Mix-Up featured Diamond, Horovitz and Yauch back on drums, guitar and bass, with Keyboard Money Mark and percussionist Alfredo Ortiz, on Beastie Boys' first ever full length offering of all-new, all-original instrumental recordings. Reminiscent of the cult hit The In Sound From Way Out! which compiled Check Your Head/Ill Communication era instrumentals, The Mix-Up found NYC's favorite sons drawing on one of their arsenal's primary strengths and pushing it into bold new directions.
Since then, Beastie Boys have recorded and prepped for release their long awaited eighth all new studio opus, Hot Sauce Committee Part 1. Following a headlining set at 2009's Bonnaroo festival during which the record's "Too Many Rappers" was premiered live with guest star Nas, the record's release was unexpectedly delayed by Yauch's surgery and treatment for parotid gland cancer. Like the record, the band's sold out debut headlining stand at the Hollywood Bowl had to be postponed, as did appearances atop the 2009 Lollapalooza and All Points West festivals. It is the most sincere hope of all in the B Boys camp that Hot Sauce Committee Part 1, which features soon to be classics "B-Boys In The Cut," "Make Some Noise," "Don't Play No Game That I Can't Win (featuring Santigold)" and more, will be released in 2011.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Ballots are sent to more than 500 voters, who will select those to be inducted at the 26th Annual Induction Ceremony. To be eligible for nomination, an act must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. The 2011 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees will be announced in December 2010 and the Ceremony will take place on March 14, 2011 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, and will be televised live on Fuse. All inductees are ultimately represented in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland OH, the nonprofit organization that exists to educate its audiences on the global impact of the rock and roll art form via the museum, as well as its education programs and library and archives.

Mix Tape Appreciation Society No. 6 :: ONLY SO MANY ALBUMS IN THE DAY
I made this mix tape for you ... AND YOU ALONE!
1. The Winebirds - "I Obscenity in Thy Mother's Milk"
From my review of "Séance Hill,” the Portland group's new(est) album, : This title track is just bursting with nervous autumn energy.
2. Motion City Soundtrack - "Boombox Generation"
I missed it by a few years, but "big ups" to those born in the early years of Generation Y: aka the headphone generation.
From the Minnesota group's latest opus, "Light Chasers," a "56-minute journey with no audio breaks that explores love and loss and searches for the light at the end of the tunnel." (Yes, that was me "biting" the official press release for the album, but, really, I couldn't have explained what it was about without the help.)
Forget what you know about math. One-half of the Posies' uncanny songwriting team does not equate to half the thrills. Not even close. This is tremendous, tremendous music.
5. Emot - "Cheapskate"
Doesn't it suck when you're labeled this and you're actually just poor? No fun.
My guess is that this isn't about North Dakota's famed Red River of the North (as it flows northward), but, then again, I've never been that adept at understanding what songs are actually about.
Truth be told: I prefer to mold songs to fit my life experiences. Isn't that the best way to enjoy records, anyway?
Truth be told: I prefer to mold songs to fit my life experiences. Isn't that the best way to enjoy records, anyway?
7. Brand New - "Magazines"
My interest in this group was first piqued when I was waiting for my Amtrak train in Chicago. Killing time, I checked out the attached mall-type-thing's overpriced record store. This band's debut, "Your Favorite Weapon," was in the "best sellers" section of the store. I assumed they were local, as I had never heard of the group before and ... I just realized how boring I must appear to my woman, my friends, my family and, among others, the blog-perusing world at large.
Regardless, I like this track.
Regardless, I like this track.
8. Grant Hart - "Let Rosemary Rock Him, Laura-Louise"
A bizarre little intro before ...
... the much-vaunted return of Minneapolis' resident hitmakers!
10. Lazerbeak - "Legend Recognize Legend"
As I still haven't received my copy of the former Plastic Constellations member's solo debut (!) in the mail, I thought I'd pull up the Doomtree-minded (his new crew) track he named it after.
You can't tell me you're not excited:

I was in Minneapolis over the weekend. The Current sure seems to like this group.
Unbelievably, this Minneapolis singer (real name: Krysta Rayford) makes music that sounds like Ms. Dynamite backed by the Avalanches.
13. George Harrison - "I Live for You"
Speaking of The Current (and I selected these tracks before heading down to the Cities, mind you), one of the station's DJs introduced a track from "All Things Must Pass" by saying it was the best Beatles solo album. I couldn't agree more ... it's as if that station was made explicitly for me.
14. Bliss - "The Melody"
One of half of Modern Gentlemen, who recently sat down with me for a Budgeteer interview. This is some catchy hip-hop for the summertime (which, yes, I realize is dying a quick death 'round here).
15. Jellyfish - "Now She Knows She's Wrong"
I guess I've never fully admitted to myself that at least half of the bands I wholeheartedly adore probably listened to Jellyfish records growing up the way I listened to Pearl Jam records. I'm looking at you, Matt Mahaffey of Self, in particular.
16. Head Like a Kite - "Noisy at the Circus"
Yes, you do recognize that voice: It's Asy from Smoosh. Love those girls!
17. Brothers Young - "Would You Land"
This lead dude's a bit of a downer, no? Nice slithering sound though.
18. J Church - "She Says"
R.I.P. Lance Hahn.
One of the most innovative groups out there. And they show no sign of slowing. Like Muse (on a level of grandiose-ness), but far less pretentious.
Sleater-Kinney frontwoman rocks out by herself. Good stuff.
21. Kings of Leon - "Joe's Head"
Despite letting their fans down earlier this year in St. Louis, there is still much to love here.
Another boring-ass story from old-as-shit me: My Nintendo-sponsored (it's true) trip to Seattle in college was rendered even more unforgettable after popping a few Minus the Bear tracks into the player. There is something to be said about hometown heroes.
23. The Jayhawks - "Real Light"
From "Tomorrow the Green Grass," the last album to feature founding member Mark Olson, who is playing in Duluth later tonight a few blocks away and *ahem* was recently interviewed by me. That was truly a trip.
24. Wilco - "Passenger Side"
"You're gonna make me spill my beer / If you don't learn how to steer." ... Can this even be considered semi-responsible songwriting?
Even though he hasn't had a regular radio gig since he was the program manager at Thunder Web Radio (now KDSU) in Fargo, Budgeteer editor Matthew R. Perrine likes to make mix tapes like he's going to play them on the air someday. This here Mix Tape Appreciation Society is a continuation of SHAKE*YOUR*SHORES, the awesome mix tape series formerly known as "Don't Tell a Soul." Enjoy!

Mix Tape Appreciation Society No. 5 :: SONGS FOR 'BIG C'
This very-special awesome mix tape was hand-crafted for my friend "Big C." She's a peach. And, quite frankly, she puts up with a lot of my shit, so it was high time for me to do something nice in return.
Before we start, a few random factoids about her, so you can get a better idea of what we're dealing with:
She drives a "power wagon." It's a truck.
She's smarter than most. In turn, boys are intimidated by her.
She likes to dance on tables ... perhaps to counter-balance how prim and proper she has to act during the week? You know, when she's being smart and all.
She once sent me a link to the video for David Guetta's "Toyfriend." I thought it was the most revealing thing ever: Maybe, just maybe, smart people are more like us than I originally thought. They too enjoy dance-tastic tracks with titles you need Urban Dictionary to decipher.
And, finally, her man lives all the way up in Toronto. From what I've been told, it's a pretty big city. (ha ha ha)

Ladies love to bounce ... right? Anyway, I can think of nothing more aurally stimulating than this "California Love"-sampling trunk rattler.
2. Phoenix - "1901"
She spent some time in the EU. (For all you disbelievers out there: Phoenix is a French band, for the thousandth time....) More importantly, she casually drops "EU" into seemingly unrelated conversations. This is true.
3. The Rural Alberta Advantage - "Don't Haunt This Place"
I made the mistake of thinking her BF was from this province. My bad.... I did get it right on Track 11, though!
4. Haley Bonar - "Arms of Harm"
This is just a good song.
5. Atmosphere - "Pour Me Another"
This one too. I mean, if she's living in the Twin Cities metro area, she should definitely know what Atmosphere is all about and who Slug and Ant are. (I figured this one was a good place to start, because: If there's a jukebox and I'm drinking, I'll be playing this one every single time.)
6. The Pixies - "Manta Ray" (Live at the BBC)
Another educational piece: Big C, here lies the greatest rock 'n' roll band in the history of our planet. Enjoy.
7. Best Friends Forever - "Handpocket"
I went to prom with one of the two "Friends." And she was my across-the-street neighbor growing up. How random is that?
8. Cars & Trucks - "Too Bad So Sad"
Rock! The Duluth News Tribune is putting together its annual back-to-school pullout Wave section for incoming freshman and I was invited to wax ecstatic about bands I like. Here's what I said about these guys: Despite an aversion to playing many out-of-town shows, Cars & Trucks is, without a doubt, the most exciting rock ‘n’ roll group in the state. While frontman Tony Bennett (no, not that Tony Bennett) has been known to produce some of the most gorgeous melodies known to man, what makes his latest outfit so essential to a night on the town are its fiery, ear-blistering blasts of post-punk “white heat.” You have been warned.
This track's "bed" is Big C's beloved "Toyfriend."
Besides, a song about loonies? How perfect is that?
Besides, a song about loonies? How perfect is that?
10. Sloan - "The Rest of My Life"
Sloan, Canada's pre-eminent musical export, seemingly wrote this one for Big C: It's all about spending the rest of one's days in the Great White North!
11. The Posies - "Ontario"
Besides talking about wanting to go to Ontario (obviously what she thinks about night and day), this blistering track includes the most head-scratchingly bizarre lyrics: "Big birds flying overhead / Who gives a shit?"
The funny thing is, you can't help but scream along.
The funny thing is, you can't help but scream along.
12. LadyHawke - "My Delirium"
13. Uffie - "Hong Kong Garden"
Big C has a weakness for Lady Gaga-level bombastic pop music. These two should keep her at bay.
14. The Rentals feat. Damon Albarn - "Big Daddy C."
For the longest time, Big C assumed her nickname was A) anatomically correct and B) completely insulting. Truth is, I needed a device to remember her real name (let's just say that, if I were a senator, I would propose a bill requiring all Americans to wear name tags every waking hour). For whatever reason, this song popped into my head.
Not a riveting story, granted, but it is a great song, so no one should be complaining.
Not a riveting story, granted, but it is a great song, so no one should be complaining.
15. Cake - "Comfort Eagle"
I heard chicks are into Cake these days, which is A-OK with me.
16. Terry Lynn - "Kingstonlogic [Angry Mix]"
Reference No. 12 and No. 13, but then factor in this little slice of knowledge: Even nice girls have bad days. She can save this one for when the phone lines are down in Canada.
Hmm ... hope she doesn't get the wrong idea from this one. And, with lyrics like "I'm gonna throw you in the ocean and see if you swim," how could she?!
In truth, I thought this gently violent track was a nice way of summing up our back-and-forths. They're entertaining to both parties,* but stumble into one of our "insult potlucks" and you might think we hate each other.

18. Yeltzi - "Get Up and Dance"
I always thought this would be the perfect wedding-dance song ... and I can only imagine that when this is played at mine, we'll definitely be kissing the security deposit goodbye as Big C takes to the tables!
19. Dealership - "Domesticated"
What special-issue mix tape would be complete without the requisite Dealership track?
20. Say Hi (To Your Mom) - "Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh"
She has an attrac--oh, nevermind.
21. LCD Soundsystem - "Drunk Girls"
See No. 18.
22. Basement Jaxx - "Living Room"
23. Kenna - "Out of Control (State of Emotion)"
Left to her own devices, I can only imagine the dance parties Big C throws for herself in her living room.
24. Felt - "Suzanne Vega"
Next time she finds herself cruising around South Minneapolis, Big C can blast this out of the PW's windows. In doing so, she'll surely make some new friends/draw some looks.
25. Alva Star - "Tornado Girl"
She's smart. I bet she can figure this one out.
*At least I sure as shit hope so!

Cloud Cult lines up three Minnesota dates on new tour
Cloud Cult Announce Fall Headlining Tour in Support of New Full-Length Studio Album – Light Chasers – Out September 14th on Earthology Records!
New York, NY – Cloud Cult are excited to announce their fall headlining tour in support of their new full-length album – Light Chasers – due out September 14th on Earthology Records. The record is the band’s first new studio release in more than two years and critics are already weighing in favorably with Pitchfork calling the album “…epic, millennial indie rock…” and John Richards from KEXP saying that Light Chasers is “the best thing Cloud Cult has ever done, which is saying a lot as everything they’ve done so far is near perfection.”
The US headlining tour will kick off near the band’s home base of Minneapolis at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN and the trek spans out over the next three months taking Cloud Cult to nearly every major US city and finds them playing renowned venues across the country including the Bluebird Theater in Denver, the Showbox in Seattle, the Trocadero in Philly and First Avenue in Minneapolis.
This run will also include a very special performance with none other than Boulder, Colorado’s eTown (www.etown.org) on September 12th. This show will be taped in front of a live audience and can be heard coast-to-coast on NPR/public, commercial, and community radio stations. Held at the Boulder Theater, the grand atmosphere will perfectly compliment Cloud Cult’s unique stage performance. eTown has a long history of presenting a variety of well known acts including Ani DiFranco, Beth Orton, Bright Eyes, Cyndi Lauper, Imogen Heap, Ingrid Michaelson, Jason Mraz, Matthew Caws from Nada Surf, Moby, Patterson Hood & John Neff of Drive-By Truckers, Spoon and The Avett Brothers just to name a few.
Cloud Cult will hit the East Coast in October and on November 17th and 18th they will be headlining First Avenue in Minneapolis for two hometown shows in celebration of the new album. This choice of venue is especially befitting as this past July, First Avenue honored Cloud Cult with a star on the side of the venue. This symbol of appreciation has also been extended to the likes of Aerosmith, Big Star, Depeche Mode, Devo, Flaming Lips, Foo Fighters, Metallica, Nirvana and PJ Harvey as well as many other acclaimed artists.
Check www.cloudcult.com for the most up to date information as more tour dates will be announced.
